Well the exam period is nearly over for the squad, and it's been a tricky start to the year! Balancing academic requirements, training, and the weather is never easy. January has brought County XC Championships, and both Jack Hall and Rich Horton qualified for Inter-County Champs to be held in March. We have been out riding in -5C and also gale force winds, but haven't had to compromise too much. Running in the snow has been fun, but an icy Outwoods is tricky! Just 3 short weeks since the Sprint Champs took place, the Olympic Distance Champs were held at Holme Pierrepont National Watersports Centre in Nottingham. Loughborough took a team of around 30 athlete's, with Josh Cardwell, Luke Watson, Rob Hill and Vicky Johnston and Helen O'Neill representing the performance squad. At the beginning of May Loughborough Performance Team, alongside around 30 members of the AU triathlon squad made the annual trip to St Mary's school in Calne, Wiltshire. This has traditionally been the racing opener for most, and with a 750m pool swim, 25km non-drafting bike, 5k run would be a good test. At the weekend Loughborough raced in the first University competition of the year - the Duathlon Championships at Castle Combe motor racing circuit. This is the first of a 3 race British University series that includes a Sprint and Standard Distance triathlon to be completed next summer. With the World Student Games coming up in Chinese Taipei in June 2012, it's going to be an exciting year for University Triathlon.

Good luck to Jenny Manners who is racing tomorrow in the Paralympic category TRI-6. She is a guide for Charlotte Ellis, and having won European gold back in July in Pontevedra is hoping for more success. So onto Sunday and the men's turn to have some fun at the National Club Relays. With Matt Wright still in Barbados nursing a knee injury, Matt Sharp was drafted in. So our order was Josh Cardwell leading, Matt Sharp in 2nd , 3rd was Brad Hales who is on his year in industry working at Disney in Hammersmith, and David Bishop anchoring the team. Josh got us off to a great start, coming in a close 2nd to one of the fantastic juniors at Optima (apparently this guy is sub 16 minutes for 1500m!) but Sharpey then took over and had a 20second or so cushion handing to Brad and finally David. Loughborough Triathlon raced what is one of the most fun, but also most competitive events of the year this weekend - the National Relay Championships. This was the 20th year it has been held at Notingham's Home Pierrepont rowing lake, with over 520 teams taking part in the different categories. We entered 2 teams -  a mixed (2 men and 2 women) and a male team. Mixed was on Saturday, where we were looking to defend our title from last year, and with the men racing on Sunday, where we wanted to avenge defeat last year to local club TFN. David Bishop got another taste of European competition at the Karlovy Vary Continental Cup. It is a beautiful place a couple of hours from Prague, but it is also one of the most brutal courses around. David had one of his best swims of the year to exit in the top 20. This was very good considering it was a 3 lap course, so 75 guys going round a 500m loop is going to be chaotic to say the least! Out onto the bike however and David started to struggle, and by the end was around 5 minutes down.
